A Healthy Diet Doesn’t Have To Be Rabbit Food

A lot of people think that in order to lose weight and get healthy, they have to switch to a vegetarian diet. While there’s nothing wrong with eating plenty of veggies, there are other foods to keep in mind that are good for your health and your waistline.

Fish: The Other Meat

When most people think of meat they think of beef, chicken or pork. But if you’re trying to eat a healthier diet, you should be thinking fish. Adding fish to your diet can help you lose weight and keep your heart doing what it does best.

Your body needs protein to survive and most of the good protein comes from meat. However, most meat doesn’t come without negatives, which is usually high cholesterol and unhealthy levels of fat.

Fish, on the other hand, is high in protein and relatively low in fat and cholesterol. This means you can eat fish more often without worrying too much about your mid-section.

Another benefit to eating fish is that it’s rich in Omega-3 fatty acids. These fatty acids come from the oils found in many types of fish and researchers have found that Omega-3 is great food for the heart. In fact, the American Heart Association says that the average person should eat fish rich in omega-3 at least twice a week.

There are also studies being conducted that, while still early, seem to indicate that omega-3 can help prevent macular degeneration, kidney disease and even cancer.

So, what kinds of fish should you be eating?

Obviously, getting a Fillet O’ Fish sandwich at McDonald’s is out as is all fried fish. Any fish you eat should be baked as opposed to fried.

In order to get the benefits of eating fish rich in omega-3, consider adding to your diet: Atlantic salmon, pink salmon, white tuna, Alaskan king crab, and scallops.
